Penguins
Happy World Penguin Day (20th January)!

The Cornish Seal Sanctuary have some very exciting penguin news to share with you all...

The Sanctuary´s little waddle of penguins have moved on to a lovely new home in a fantastic location with a much larger group of Humbolt penguins on the 25th of January 2024.   This is part of the Sanctuary´s progression to extend the conservation efforts here in Cornwall.

While the staff are missing the penguins enormously (and we know you will, too), this move will allow the Sanctuary to start work on refurbing their enclosure for what´s to come later this year.

SANCTUARY WELCOMES BABY BEAVERS FOR FIRST TIME IN TWO YEARS!

The Cornish Seal Sanctuary is starting 2024 with three new additions as it welcomes a family of young Eurasian beavers to Secret Creek for the first time in two years.   The kits, who are less than a year old, arrived at the Sanctuary as orphans after being translocated by the Beaver Trust.   Read more.

Update - 17th January 2024 : Last week members of the animal care team had a visit from Head & Head Veterinary Practice Ltd (the sanctuary´s vet partners in Helston) who helped the team to x-ray a grey seal pup with a poorly flipper.

David Tennant had puss coming from a wound near his nailbed and, as it wasn´t healing the way the team had hoped over a couple of weeks with his treatment, they feared it might be broken.

The x-ray revealed a slight decrease in bone density from infection and inflammation; however, as there was no break, this meant he didn´t need surgery and the team could continue his current treatment.

In these snaps, you can see animal care team member, Elliot, getting the pup into position, ahead of the x-ray.

Today, David is continuing to recover under the care and making his way through the rehabilitation programme.   A huge thank you to Head & Head for their support!   Click here to see larger versions of these photos below.

Six things to remember when spotting seals in the wild!

Post Release Monitoring of Seals
Each released seal pup is given a flipper tag with an unique ID number. This helps the Cornish Seal Sanctuary and the Cornwall Seal Group Research Trust (CSGRT) to track and monitor where pups end up and how they are doing once they are back in the wild.

This month the following seals were spotted in the wild by members of the CSGRT from around the coast of Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly:-

Turtle on 1st, 3rd, 5th, 6th, 10th, 12th, 15th, 24th, 29th and 31st January 2024

The information regarding tagged seals seen in the wild is copyright of the CSGRT.

By monitoring the behaviour of seals after release back into the wild, the Cornish Seal Sanctuary and the CSGRT can use this information to define the best practice standards and policies that they can share with the international rescue community.

Each seal´s fur pattern is unique and enables the CSGRT volunteers track them for life. Seals face many challenges, yet we all depend on them to balance our marine ecosystem, which is essential to make the oxygen we breathe. Seals are our globally rare wildlife tourist attraction, helping diversify coastal economic prosperity.
