Idris Elba was rescued on 29th November 2023

Idris Elba, an 8 weeks old male grey seal pup, was rescued from Little Fistral in Newquay on the 29th of November 2023 by volunteer marine mammals medics of the British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR).

He was found with a few wounds to his body, a case of seal pox (which is similar to chicken pox in humans, the seal gets lethargic, and develops unpleasant blister-like lesions on their skin, but usually within a few weeks they recover), malnourished and underweight for his age.
This pup was taken to the BDMLR´s seal hospital in Cornwall for initial treatment and care until a pen was available on 12th of December 2023 for him at the Sanctuary´s hospital at Gweek where he continues his rehabilitation journey.

Update - 30th December 2023 : Idris´s wounds and pox have since cleared up nicely!   He is now in the outside nursery pools, this means he is on the road to recovery and mixing with other seal pups, also has a deeper pool to swim in.   Pups in the nursery pools will be learning how to behave in the wild, interacting with other seals and also competing for their fish, which are all vital skills they will need when they are released back out into the wild.

His flipper tag ID number is SL274 (yellow).
