Benedict Cumberbatch rescued on 23rd November 2023

Benedict Cumberbatch, an 8 weeks old male grey seal pup, was rescued on the 23rd of November 2023 from the beautiful beach at Praa Sands by Denise and George, volunteer marine mammals medics from the British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR).
This poorly chap was found with respiratory breathing problems, very snotty, dehydrated, lethargic and malnourished at 15kg.

A decision was made to rescue the pup and take him to the BDMLR´s seal hospital in Cornwall for initial treatment and care until a pen was available for him at the Sanctuary´s hospital at Gweek on the 4th of December 2023.

Update - 10th December 2023 : This photo below of Benedict was taken in the hospital. He needs to put on a little more weight before Benedict is moved down to the outside pools for his next stage of rehabilitation.
His flipper tag ID number is SL272 (yellow).

Update - 3rd January 2024 : Benedict was moved from the hospital to the outside nursery pools, this mean he is on the road to recovery and mixing with other seal pups, also has a deeper pool to swim in. Pups in the nursery pools will be learning how to behave in the wild, interacting with other seals and also competing for their fish, which are all vital skills they will need when they are released back out into the wild. These photos of Benedict were taken in the outside pools on the 3rd of January 2024.

Update - 17th January 2024 : Benedict along with Idris Elba and Zendaya have now fully recovered and are at the perfect weight of 30+kg, ready to thrive back in the wild! They were released on 12th of January 2024 at Kennack Sands.
