Pup Update : Earlier this month we said Goodbye to Grub...from arriving unusually early in the season, and making quite the entrance by being flown in by helicopter! This little seal pup has had quite the journey. After months of care and rehab, our super-early starter is finally back where she belongs.
It was strange to watch Grub enter the sea as the waves pounded over her, she was only 2-3 days old when she was separated from her mum and rescued. We did chuckle when Grub spotted a few seagulls above her.
We all wished Grub good luck and waved with tears in our eyes.

A huge privilege and great fun for St Dennis Band - Cornwall to play at the Cornish Seal Sanctuary to celebrate the 50th Anniversary at Gweek on August Bank Holiday Monday.
Lots of seal themed arrangements and Sheba´s favourite was...Kiss by a Rose by Seal!
The Band also performed one of the No. 1 songs in 1975 perfect celebration for our golden year! If you haven´t already guessed it was...Bye Bye Baby which was a hit by the Bay City Rollers.

Cornwall Council has recently voted unanimous for a Voluntary Ban on hollow Flying Rings on the 22nd of July 2025 and we are sure that our county wants to demonstrate that we are just as caring towards our marine life, so please push for a voluntary ban on flying rings in your areas. This isn´t about stopping people from enjoying the beach; it´s about making a small, simple change that has a huge impact. Solid flying discs are just as fun, but unlike flying rings, they don´t pose a deadly risk to seals, dolphins, and other marine wildlife. By making the right choice, we can all help prevent the needless suffering of our coastal animals.
Councillor Rosie Moore for Wadebridge East & St Minver, who brought the successful motion at the full meeting of Cornwall Council to get voluntary ban on the sale, purchase and use of plastic flying rings, visited the Cornish Seal Sanctuary on 26th of August. Rosie wrote on her facebook page "I´ve had an amazing day at the Cornish Seal Sanctuary, being introduced to all their very cute residents and learning more about the vital support they provide for marine life.
I was so pleased to be able to bring a motion to council in support of the Sanctuary, and even more delighted that it passed unanimously. It was a real privilege to visit and see first-hand the incredible work the team do to rescue, rehabilitate and protect these beautiful animals. Thank you to the many local businesses who have also been in touch supporting this motion.
Thank you Grace for a very detailed and educated tour and a big thank you to Barry & Joyce for being such inspirations and for the time they give to volunteering at the Sanctuary. There´s only one resident who been there longer than Barry & Joyce and that´s Sheba the seal, who was rescued back in 1974 by the Cornish Seal Sanctuary´s founder, Ken Jones.
It was a gorgeous day today, in the sunshine and beautiful location but a little secret for you...it´s also a great day out in the wintertime as there is lots of seal pups to be seen, they will start arriving for rehabilitation over the next couple of months!"

As part of their charity badge, they chose the Cornish Seal Sanctuary as their nominated charity and held a bake sale at school in July, raising an amazing £33!

"Pup My Ride" campaign
A BIG thank you to everyone who has donated so far towards the Seal Sanctuary´s "Pup My Ride" campaign, with your help we have managed to raise £1,535 to date, allowing the team to purchase an all weather canopy for the seal pup rescue vehicle!
This vital piece of kit allow us to safely and securely transport rescued seal pups to our hospital, as well as providing them with a quiet sheltered space to transport them back home to the ocean.
But we still need your help to purchase more life saving equipment!

We went to check on a seal haul-out during low tide in Cornwall this month - enjoy admiring these photos. Click here to see a selection of photos.
These photos were taken with Nikon Coolpix P1000 camera which contains a 3000mm zoom lens!
Each released seal pup is given a flipper tag with an unique ID number. This helps the Cornish Seal Sanctuary, the Seal Research Trust and other organisations to track and monitor where pups end up and how they are doing once they are back in the wild.
This month the following seals were spotted in the wild around south-west England:-
By monitoring the behaviour of seals after released back into the wild, the Cornish Seal Sanctuary, Seal Research Trust and other organisations can use this information to define the best practice standards and policies that they can share with the international rescue community.
Each seal´s fur pattern is unique and enables the organisations to track them for life.
Seals face many challenges, yet we all depend on them to balance our marine ecosystem, which is essential to make the oxygen we breathe.
Seals are our globally rare wildlife tourist attraction, helping diversify coastal economic prosperity.
