Big Bellied Seahorse (Hippocampus abdominalis) live in sea grass beds and on reefs in South East Australia and New Zealand.
Millions of seahorses are illegally sold for the curio trade and for use in traditional Asian medicines. The pet trade is also an increasingly large threat.
Male seahorses have a brood pouch on their belly which can hold up to 600 eggs at a time! The female deposits her eggs during mating then it is up to dad to carry them and give birth.
