Termite was rescued on 25th May 2025 The British Divers Marine Life Rescue volunteer marine mammal medics (BDMLR) responded to a call-out regarding a seal pup reported on Porthtowan beach. Polly, one of the BDMLR volunteers, was met by a member of the public who had made the call to the BDMLR´s hotline, and they guided her to the pup´s location.   Polly said "a dodgy mobile signals meant I couldn´t get "what3words" working etc., so was very grateful for his help.   The other volunteer medics, Jeremy and Sue, were already on scene, doing a fantastic job keeping the public and dogs at a safe distance.   After a call with Jenny at BDMLR´s head office, it was agreed that we would assess the pup.   She was visibly small and dehydrated.   During the assessment on the beach, the pup´s initial weight was 14.1kg, her temperature was 35.9°C.   Following further discussion with Jenny, it was decided that the pup would be uplifted." Polly continues "Mel arrived on the scene and assisted Jeremy with carrying the pup in the cage to the car park.   We were also kindly supported by the Porthtowan RNLI Lifeguards, who helped carry kit back on their quad bike, and also due to the urgency caused by the incoming tide.   I then relayed the pup to the Cornish Seal Sanctuary, where she has now been named Termite.   She was very chatty in the car on the way to Gweek!" Photos Credit : Polly Ford - BDMLR Update - 27th May 2025 : Termite, is a 2 weeks old female semi-moulted whitecoat seal pup, who was found malnourished.   Upon arrival at the seal hospital, she was assessed by the Sanctuary´s Rosevean Veterinary Practice and prescribed a course of antibiotics.   The Sanctuary´s expert animal care team will take good care of Termite, feeding the pup every few hours to help her to grow big and strong. This photo below was taken the next day (26th May 2025) after her arrival, she is in the isolation area of the hospital where she is resting quietly. Update - 8th June 2025 : Termite is steadily putting on weight, she now weighs 14kg.   She is still quite a stressy pup but seems to be enjoying having a swim in the hospital. Update - June 2025 : Termite has sadly passed away earlier this month; it is always very sad when one of the rescued pups dies but sometimes these little ones just don´t have enough antibodies and strength in them to pull through, despite the best efforts of all the Sanctuary´s Animal Care Specialists.
