Rainy-Bat was rescued on 20th February 2025

The Cornish Seal Sanctuary received a telephone call from a member of the public who was concerned about a seal alone on a beach at Praa Sands on the 20th of February 2025. Beth, a member of the animal care team, was dispatched to check on the pup.
The pup was found dehydrated with deep wounds on her nose, a high temperature and pneumonia. She was also malnourished and underweight for her age. Whilst on the beach, Beth tested the pup for Avian Flu which was a negative result.
This 3-4 months old female grey seal pup has been named Rainy-Bat was brought back to the Sanctuary´s hospital for care and treatment.
On arrival at the seal hospital, the Sanctuary´s vet carried out an assessment and then prescribed a course of antibiotics and anti-inflammatories.

Update - 15th March 2025 : Rainby-Bat was joined by Neil, a fellow rescued pup, in the outside nursery pools about a week ago. Together they´re learning essential survival skills, including how to compete for food, an important step in preparing for life in the wild! Rainy-Bat and Neil enjoying saying hello to the visitors through the window in the underwater viewing area.
His flipper tag ID number is SL326 (yellow).

Update - 8th April 2025 : Rainy-Bat is currently in the rehabilitation pool with Neil, this means they both are ready to return home to the ocean.

Update - 20th April 2025 : Rainy-Bat along with Neil have completed their rehabilitation and reached their ideal release weight of 30kg+.
It was such a beautiful early cold spring morning as we watched the seal pups being released back into the wild on the 16th of April 2025. We all wished them both good luck and waved with tears in our eyes.
