Run for Banana : Charity appeals for last-minute runners to help fund lifelong care for beloved rescue seal
A rescued seal who requires lifelong specialist care is at the heart of a fundraising appeal as the Cornish Seal Sanctuary makes a final call for participants to sign up for its "Sprint for Seals" event.
Banana, one of the Sanctuary´s most recognisable residents, was rescued as a pup but cannot be released back into the wild due to a neurological condition that causes seizure-like episodes similar to epilepsy.
Like many of the resident seals cared for by the Cornish Seal Sanctuary, Banana will spend the rest of her life in specialist care, requiring ongoing medication, monitoring and dedicated support from the Sanctuary´s expert animal care team.
Now, participants taking part in Sprint for Seals will be helping provide the vital care Banana needs every day of the year. Banana has become a firm favourite with visitors and staff thanks to her larger-than-life personality.
"Banana is impossible to ignore," said Heather Green, Animal Care Specialist at the Sanctuary. "She´s incredibly confident, always wants to know what´s going on and often likes to be at the centre of attention. We joke that "She´s a bit too much for some of the other seals because "She´s so enthusiastic and inquisitive.
Heather continues "But behind that big personality is a seal who relies on us every single day. Her condition means she needs lifelong medication and specialist care, which is why events like Sprint for Seals are so important."
The event offers something for all ages and abilities. Participants take on the 3K route through the stunning surroundings of the Cornish Seal Sanctuary, while younger supporters can take part in the brand-new 1K "Pup Run".
Supporters who can´t make it to Cornwall can also join virtually via Strava, running, jogging or walking their chosen distance from anywhere in the UK or beyond while still supporting seal rescue and rehabilitation.
All on-site participants will receive an exclusive Sprint for Seals medal, a Cornish Seal Sanctuary reusable water bottle and entry to the Sanctuary to visit the resident animals.
Funds raised through the event will support the Sanctuary´s rescue, rehabilitation and lifelong animal care work, helping seals like Banana while also contributing to the charity´sFund Our Future campaign to create an even better home for the animals in its care.
