Nit was rescued on 15th September 2024

Nit, a 5 days old female grey (whitecoat) seal pup, was rescued on the 15th of September 2024 after she was found on the beach below Tintagel castle by members of the public.
Volunteer marine mammal medics, Michelle, Linda and Michaela, from the British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR) were called to go and check on the whitecoat pup to see whether mum was nearby. As there were people on the beach, some with dogs, a decision was made to rescue this pup. The pup was found severely underweight and in a terrible state.
The pup was taken to a local holding veterinary facilities overnight then the next morning transported her from North Cornwall to the Cornish Seal Sanctuary in Gweek where the animal care team could continue her rehabilitation.

Upon arrival at the Seal Sanctuary´s hospital, the local vet was called to carried out an assessment of the pup and prescribed a course of antibiotics.
Nit is being fed a blended fish soup every 4 hours to keep up the level of feeding that her mum would have provided, but even so, it is impossible for the team to emulate the nutrient rich and calorie dense milk that ensures pups are able to put on around 1.5kg a day up to their weaning at around 17-21 days. Nit has a long rehab in front of her, but the Sanctuary team will make every effort to give Nit a second chance.
These photos below were taken a few days later on the 18th of September 2024 in the isolation area of the hospital where she is resting quietly.

Update - 28th September 2024 : Nit has sadly passed away on the 20th of September 2024; it is always very sad when one of the rescued pups dies but sometimes these little ones just
don´t have enough antibodies and strength in them to pull through, despite the best efforts of all the Sanctuary´s Animal Care Specialists.
