Luis Woodlouse was rescued on 16th January 2025

British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR) hotline team received an early morning telephone call on the 16th of January 2025 from a fellow member of the BDMLR volunteer marine mammal medics who was concerned about a very young seal pup in Sennen Cove.

George had called the BDMLR area coordinator to seek assistance to check on the seal.   Alison, one of the medics, headed down to assess the situation and decide whether the seal needed to be taken away.   Alison said "George had spotted the well hidden pup on his walk.   The cove was busy with dog walkers, George guarded the pup until I arrived. Breathing rate was elevated at 30/2.   Extremely lethargic so it was very easy to bag him in situ to move to a more suitable surface for full assessment.   His demeanour didn´t change significantly on handling. Temperature 37.7°C, weight 22kg, possible swelling to rear left flipper and minimal grip in front right flipper with nail bed abrasions.   Significant alopecia, extremely dehydrated and black diarrhoea."

A decision was made to take this pup to the BDMLR´s seal hospital for initial treatment and care then the next day, the pup was transferred to the Sanctuary´s hospital at Gweek where he continues his rehabilitation journey.

Update - 19th January 2025 : This 3-4 months old male grey seal pup has been named Luis Woodlouse.   Members of the Sanctuary´s Animal Care team have been cleaning Luis´s wounds on a daily basis and Luis is learning how to eat fish by himself.

Luis has large hairless (alopecia) patches behind his head and neck as well as a few small wounds across his body.

These photos were taken a few days later in the hospital on the 19th of January 2025.

Update - 31st January 2025 : Luis just needs to put on a little more weight before being moved to the outside pools to continue his rehabilitation.   Following closer inspection of the back of Luis´s head after finding dead mites on the floor of his pen.   He was given mite treatment, we are pleased to say this has cleared up.

Update - 15th March 2025 : Luis was moved from the hospital down to the outside pools to join the other rescued seal pups.   Together the pups are learning essential survival skills, including how to compete for food, an important step in preparing for life in the wild!

His flipper tag ID number is SL321 (yellow).

This and further photos of Luis were taken on 13th of March 2025 in the rehabilitation pool.

Update - 31st March 2025 : Luis Woodlouse along with Leaf Cutter, Dung Beetle, Michael and Roach Bug have completed their rehabilitation and reached their ideal release weight of 30kg+.   They were released back into the wild on the 31st of March 2025.

On the day of their release, Dung Beetle, Leaf Cutter, Michael and Roach Bug, were fitted with specialist GPS tracking equipment.   This innovative step will provide valuable insights into the pups´ movements and behaviours as they return to the sea.   The study, which is first of its kind in Southwest England, is part of the GPS tracking equipment for 15 grey seal pups of the 2024/25 rescue season being issued with the tags to examine their at-sea behaviour.   The Cornish Seal Sanctuary is working alongside Dr Luis Huckstadt, senior lecturer at the University of Exeter as he leads this exciting pilot study.

Nic Newman, a member of the public, sent us these photos of Luis via the Cornwall Seal Group Research Trust, after the seals were returned to the sea.   Nic said "I was in the water and watched the young seals chasing and hunting a small shoal of fish.   Wonderful to see them in their natural environment.   I wouldn´t have gone in the water if I had known there was going to be a release.   I was concerned when the seals came over to me, but they just had a look and swam off".
