Klaus was rescued on 4th October 2024

Klaus, a 4-5 weeks old male grey seal pup, was rescued on the 4th of October 2024 from Stinky Bay in Polzeath by members of the British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR) volunteer marine mammal medics and transported to Seal Sanctuary in Gweek for care and rehabilitation. This pup was found with multiple wounds to his body.
Upon arrival at the seal hospital, he was assessed by the Sanctuary´s Head & Head vets and prescribed a course of antibiotics.
The Sanctuary´s animal care team will take good care of Klaus, feeding the pup every few hours to help him to grow big and strong.
This photo below was taken a few days later on 9th of October 2024 in the isolation area of the hospital where he was resting quietly.

Update - 20th October 2024 : Klaus spent just a couple of weeks in the hospital before he was moved down to the outside pool for his next stage of rehabilitation. This means he is on the road to recovery and also has a deeper pool to swim in. He is sharing this nursery pool with another rescued seal pup named Sun Beetle, they are doing very well and learning how to compete for fish which are all vital skills they will need when they are released back out into the wild.

Update - 19th November 2024 : Klaus is currently in the rehabilitation pool, he needs to put on a few more kilos before he is ready to be returned to the wild.
Klaus has been fitted with specialist GPS tracking equipment. This innovative step will provide valuable insights into the pups´ movements and behaviours as they return to the sea. The study, which is first of its kind in Southwest England, Klaus is part of the 15 Grey seal pups (2024/25 rescue season) being issued with the tags to examine their at-sea behaviour. The Cornish Seal Sanctuary is working alongside Dr Luis Huckstadt, senior lecturer at the University of Exeter as he leads this exciting pilot study.

Klaus along with JP and Sun Beetle were released back into the wild on the 3rd of December 2024.
