Pup update : 6th September 2022 - Parsley, who was rescued on 18th August 2022, had been responding well to her treatment and was slowly putting on weight. She had been having daily paddles to encourage her to interact with her fish and to help her with her progress, with hopes she would be able to make a successful return to the sea.

Jana Sirova, the Sanctuary´s General Manager, said "This weekend Parsley became a little quiet and developed a high temperature. The team jumped into action and the vets prescribed another course of treatment which she began to respond to. On Monday morning (4th September), Parsley fed as normal and had her morning paddle without concern but by mid-morning we found she was tiring, which was then followed by a seizure.

Our fantastic vet team at Head & Head Veterinary Centre responded quickly and tried everything to help her, but, despite everyone´s best efforts, it became clear there was nothing more that could be done. Parsley was allowed to pass away. She has since been taken for a post mortem, so we can find out more. So far, results are showing some abnormalities on her brain and the team are determined to investigate further, with samples now being sent to the lab.

This news is devastating for our team, who have worked tirelessly night and day to support Parsley at her most vulnerable time of life. However, the reality of our rescue and rehab works means that, while we are able to save the vast majority, we cannot always save every pup. A huge thank you to our team and our wider support network who helped us keep Parsley fighting for as long as we could, and to the public whose donations make this vital work possible every day."

Meet Chilli, a 5 days old female grey seal pup, was rescued on the 8th of September 2022 from Kynance Cove by members of the British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR) marine mammal medics. After 24 hours of observations on the beach by the BDMLR medics and no sign of mum, Chilli was brought in. She had some bite wounds around her eyes but luckily the eyes themselves were not damaged. Chilli was underweight, exhausted and very frightened.

Update : 25th September 2022 - Photo below right of Chilli was taken on the 23rd of September 2022.   Chilli has now finished her course of treatment and has been weaned onto fish from fish soup, although she is yet to learn to feed for herself. She is having short swims throughout the day to help to build up her muscles and encourage interest in feeding herself on the fish left in her hospital pen.   Chilli now weighs 15.2kg.

Meet Curry, a 4 weeks old male grey seal pup, was rescued on the 10th of September 2022 from Kynance Cove by members of the BDMLR medics. The pup was very skinny and weak with some infected bite wounds to his flippers and body. He was prescribed a course of antibiotics and anti-inflammatories.

Update : 25th September 2022 - Curry is slowly having his food increased to help to gain weight and energy. He is now feeling much better, and his wounds are healing. Curry is still on medication and learning to feed for himself. He is still a little bit of a messy eater and loves plastering the walls with fish flakes but Curry is getting better every day.   These photos of Curry were taken on the 23rd of September 2022 in the hospital pen number 4. He currently weighs 18kg.

It´s understood that someone drew a heart around a young seal pup on the beach before BDLMR attended, which is why the Cornish Seal Sanctuary and the BDLMR are reminding people to steer clear of pups as this behaviour can cause serious problems. Special event sees Successful Launch of the "Fund Our Future" campaign
The Cornish Seal Sanctuary marked the official launch of a £1.3million fundraising campaign to future proof the site for years to come with a special garden party on Thursday 1st September 2022.

The event, sponsored by the innovative minerals exploration company Cornish Lithium, saw businesses from across Cornwall invited to learn about the "Fund Our Future" project.

Part of significant plans to renovate the Sanctuary, which opened in Gweek back in 1975, this project will see the replacement and construction of four new pools - doubling the water volume across the site - with the installation of a state-of-the-art filtration system.   Click here to read more.

Celebrating Sheba´s 48th birthday!
On 22nd September the Animal Care Team celebrated our fabulous Sheba´s Birthday!

Sheba was originally rescued as a pup in Cornwall in the mid-1970s. She had nasty infections in both eyes which left her partially sighted.

She is incredibly social and playful; enjoying spending time with the other seals in the pool. She also adores enrichment activities - especially ice blocks or playing with huge fronds of seaweed!

We Must Keep the Penguins Safe!
Please be aware the Animal Care Team are now taking precautions to protect the Humbodlt Penguins family, following increasing reports of avian flu in the area.

As part of this, the team is managing extra protocols to mitigate any risks, while ensuring the penguins continue to get the care and attention they need.

If you see any sick or dead birds on site, please do not touch!

Post Release Monitoring of Seals
Each released seal pup is given a flipper tag with an unique ID number. This helps the Cornish Seal Sanctuary and the Cornwall Seal Group Research Trust (CSGRT) to track and monitor where pups end up and how they are doing once they are back in the wild.

This month the following seals were spotted in the wild by members of the CSGRT from around the coast of Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly:-

Orion on 1st, 8th, 12th, 13th, 15th & 19th September 2022
Shirley on 6th September 2022
Spiderman on 6th & 12th September 2022
Coral on 10th September 2022
Perm on 18th & 26th September 2022

The above information regarding tagged seals seen in the wild is copyright of the SRT.

By monitoring the behaviour of seals after release back into the wild, the Cornish Seal Sanctuary and the SRT can use this information to define the best practice standards and policies that they can share with the international rescue community.

Each seal´s fur pattern is unique and enables the SRT volunteers track them for life. Seals face many challenges, yet we all depend on them to balance our marine ecosystem, which is essential to make the oxygen we breathe. Seals are our globally rare wildlife tourist attraction, helping diversify coastal economic prosperity.

Thank you to everyone who has visited so far, your support allows the Sanctuary to take care of the wonderful animals. The Cornish Seal Sanctuary couldn´t do the work rehabilitating poorly and injured seal pups or provide vital life-long care for the residents without you.
