Sudden Passing of our Dear friend André
It is with devastated hearts that the Cornish Seal Sanctuary announces the sudden passing of our dear friend André, the California Sea Lion.

Tamara Cooper, the Sanctuary´s Curator said "André became part of the Sanctuary family in 2009 and was a whirlwind from the moment he joined us! His enthusiasm for his training sessions, and more accurately for food, was well known."
Andre in December 2014 It was during his daily training sessions when André showed his obvious intelligence and desire to please. But ask any member of the team and they will tell you that when working with André you learnt as much from him as he learnt from you.

As one team member put it "he taught me loads, especially the importance of knowing an animal´s personality, not just the species. Once you got to know his ways, he was a joy to work with and always tried his hardest to get things right."
Over the past few months André had been being treated for a persistent eye condition that had affected his vision and was causing him discomfort.

The treatment plan had reached the limit for its success but had not resolved so the decision was made that further veterinary investigation would be beneficial to see if surgery may be required.
Andre - shouting for his breakfast The expert zoo veterinary team was assembled on the 11th June 2020 and the examination and surgery was very successful. André began to come around back in his pool with all his worried team around him and he looked to be doing well, but sadly just hours later with the team still around him he suddenly passed away.

André´s passing has been a huge shock to all the team and a full post-mortem has been carried out to establish any underlying cause.
Jana Sirova, the Sanctuary´s General Manager said "For many of our guests we know this will also come as a shock. He was much loved and a highlight of any visit as he zoomed around his pool. He will be fondly remembered by many as the energetic and confident showman, but equally as the gentle and sensitive sealion who could not have tried harder for those that worked closely with him and understood his uniqueness.

Thank you André for teaching us as much about what you needed as we taught you. You are our one in a million and will never, ever be forgotten."
