MONK was rescued on 20th October 2001
Monk, a rescued pup Monk, a male grey seal pup, was rescued on the 20th October 2001 from Porthcurno.   He was approximately 3 weeks old when we picked him up and very malnourished, weighing just 13kg.   He had various small superficial wounds to his body and his mouth was raw and infected. Even though his mouth seemed very tender, he was soon feeding for himself, much to the surprise of the animal care team!
His condition soon cleared up and on the 7th of November 2001 he was moved down to the nursery pools.   When he reached 31kg he was big enough to go into the convalescent pool with the other pups to learn how to compete for food.

His flipper tag ID number is 84 (yellow).

UPDATE - Monk was released back into the wild on 28th March 2002 at Church Cove along with Limpet, Rockling and Damsel.

Sadly we received a call from a fisherman a few weeks later notifying us that he had found Monk in his nets. Unfortunately a lot of the modern day nets used for fishing are made from a material which is almost invisible when under the water, seals may swim into the them unaware!

LIMPET was rescued on 19th October 2001
Limpet, a rescued pup Limpet, a female grey seal pup, was rescued on the 19th October 2001 from Boscastle Harbour after locals had spotted her halfway up a slipway.

She was 4 weeks of age when rescued and had a large swelling to the skull and left fore-flipper, superficial damage to the cornea of her right eye, as well as a raging temperature.
Limpet responded slowly to the treatment we were giving her in the hospital and showed little interest in feeding for her self. However, once she was feeling better and we started to fill her hospital pool with water she quickly got the idea and is now feeding well and eating her fish whole.
She was moved down to share a nursery pool with Puffa on the 1st December 2001 and will soon be moved into the convalescence pool for her final stage of rehabilitation.

Her flipper tag ID number is 83 (yellow).

UPDATE - All the swelling has now healed and she was released 28th March 2002 at Church Cove along with Monk, Rocklin and Damsel.

SCAMPI was rescued on 25th October 2001
Scampi, a rescued pupScampi, a male grey seal pup, was rescued on 25th of October 2001 from Porthreath.   He was roughly 4 weeks of age, although he was underweight at only 15kg.   He was very quiet when approached, which is unusual behaviour for a seal, which would normally be very aggressive towards humans and other animals.   He had no visible wounds, and the blood sample that we took showed that he was clear from any infections.
He only had to be encouraged to feed in order for him to put on more weight. He was transferred to the nursery pools and then onto the convalescent pool with the other pups. At the last weighing he was a staggering 65kg, well over the release weight of 40kg. He has now been transferred to the penguin pool and waiting for good weather for his release.

His flipper tag ID number is 86 (yellow).

Scampi was released on the 22nd March 2002 at Porthtowan with Gnasher and Pluto. He has a blue stripe on the top of his head for identification purposes.
