Turmeric was rescued on 4th January 2023

Turmeric, a 12 weeks old male grey seal pup, was rescued on the 4th of January 2023 from Mawgan Porth by members of the British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR) marine mammal medics.

He was found with some deep wounds around his tail, problems with breathing and coughing!

The pup was taken to the BDMLR´s seal hospital for initial treatment and care until a pen was made available for him at the Sanctuary´s hospital at Gweek on the 6th of January 2023. He came to the Sanctuary to continue his rehabilitation journey.
Update - 22nd January 2023 : Turmeric is still in the hospital, he currently weighs 17.3kg. It will not be too long before he is moved to the outside nursery pool for his next stage of rehabilitation.   These photos below were taken on the 21st of January 2023.

His flipper tag ID number is SL172 (white).
Update - 26th February 2023 : The animal care team had noticed that Turmeric was starting to have problems in both eyes, although one was much worse. So he recently went to visit the vets where he received treatment for a corneal ulcer and prescribed medication so that he is not in any pain.   He´s very curious and chunky seal and hopefully soon he will make a full recovery from his eye problem.
Update - 6th March 2023 : Turmeric visited the vets on the 3rd of March 2023, they seem pleased with the healing of his eye.
Update - 26th March 2023 : During Turmeric´s time in the hospital, the team noticed that one of his eyes was at a high risk of rupture.   The team focused on trying to save his eye for the past month but unfortunately, it did not improve.   Turmeric received an operation to have the eye removed last week. The operation went really well and lasted about an hour and a half, he also breathed mostly for himself, which is amazing!

The eye area will be quite swollen for a while until the wound starts to heal. Turmeric is on antibiotics and pain relief for the next 7 days as well as receiving daily eye cleaning from our animal experts.   He will start feeling a lot more comfortable now as the build-up of pressure behind his eye is now gone. The team suspect he will make a full recovery and hopefully be released into the wild soon.
Update - 16th April 2023 : Turmeric is now in the outside nursery pool number 3 with another rescued seal pup named Sesame. They are learning to swim and to compete for their fish during feeding time. Once they have put on bit more weight, Turmeric along with Sesame will be released back into the wild in the next few weeks.   Click here to see a larger version of these photos below which were taken on 15th April 2023.
