S´mores was rescued on 30th August 2025 S´mores, a 4-5 weeks old female grey seal pup, was rescued on the 31st of August 2025 from Stranglers beach, Crackington Haven, by marine mammal medics volunteers for the British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR). This pup was found very malnourished with a swollen flipper and a high temperature.   A decision was made by the BDMLR medics to uplift and transport her to a local veterinary surgery overnight after care and medication. The next morning the pup was relayed by car by the some of the BDMLR marine medics from the Vets holding facilities in North Cornwall to the Cornish Seal Sanctuary at Gweek for her care and rehabilitation. Photo Credit : Michelle Robinson-Clement - BDMLR Update : 8th September 2025 - Upon arrival at the Seal Sanctuary´s hospital, the local vet was called to carry out an assessment of the pup and prescribed a course of antibiotics and also had a few puncture wounds. S´mores is eating fish with a little help from the animal care team and her temperature is back to normal.   Upon arrival at the seal hospital on 1st of September 2025, she spent a few days in the quiet area of the hospital to rest before she was moved into the main area of the hospital. Update : 21st September 2025 - S´mores spent just over 2 weeks in the hospital before she was moved down to the outside pool on 19th of September 2025 for her next stage of rehabilitation.   This means she is on the road to recovery and also has a deeper pool to swim in. Pup Update : 7th November 2025 - S´mores is now ready to be released back into the wild.   This photo below was taken on the 5th of November 2025 in the nursery pool number 4. Pups in the nursery pools will be learning how to behave in the wild, interacting with other seals and also competing for their fish, which are all vital skills they will need when they are released back out into the wild. Pup Update : 14th November 2025 - This photo below of S´mores was taken on the 11th of November 2025 in the rehabilitation pool. She is currently sharing this rehabilitation pool with two other rescued seal pups, Meringue and Todd. On the 18th of November 2025 the Cornish Seal Sanctuary released their first seal pup of the 2025/26 rescue season.   Each rescued seal pup is weighed every week to find out who has reached the ideal target weight of 30+kg.   S´mores was over 30kg, so was ready to be released back into the wild.   She has completed her rehabilitation and it was time for S´mores to go home. S´mores was loaded into the back of a 4x4 vehicle from the rehabilitation pool and driven the short distance to a beach.   She confidently made her way into the surf and disappeared beneath the waves; a heart-warming moment that marks the successful end of her rehabilitation journey.   We all wished her good luck and waved with tears in our eyes.   Click here to see a selection of photos.
