Sierra was rescued on 9th December 2025
Sierra, a 10-12 weeks old female grey seal pup, was rescued on the 9th of December 2025 from Sandy Cove by British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR) marine mammal medic volunteers.   She was found de-hydrated, malnourished and underweight at 14kg with an upper respiratory infection.

The seal pup was taken to the BDMLR´s seal hospital in Cornwall for initial treatment and care then transferred on the 24th of December 2025 to the Sanctuary´s hospital in Gweek where she will continue her rehabilitation journey.

Update - 26th December 2025 : Now that Sierra wounds have almost all healed and the respiratory infection is almost gone, she can start to have short swims.

The animal care team are feeding Sierra up and monitoring her weight gain, once she is big enough, she will be moved to the outside nursery pools.

Update - 14th January 2026 : Sierra was moved down to the outside nursery pools for her next stage of rehabilitation.   This means she is on the road to recovery and also has a deeper pool to swim in.   At the moment she is sharing her enclosure with Mochi.   Sierra currently weighs 20.2kg.

Pups in the nursery pools will be learning how to behave in the wild, interacting with other seals and also competing for their fish, which are all vital skills they will need when they are released back out into the wild.

Sierra´s flipper tag ID number SL359 (yellow).

How you can help?

The Cornish Seal Sanctuary couldn´t do their work without you.   Every year, we rescue seal pups in need of care from around the coastline.   From wounds to entanglement to malnourishment; there are lots of reasons why seal pups might need rescuing.

Seal pups cost on average £2,000 - £3,000 to go through rehabilitation - and this doesn´t include those that require special care.
