Each rescued seal pup is weighed every week to find out who has reached the ideal target weight of 30+kg. Saffron and Vanilla were weighed and both were over 30kg, so were ready to be released back into the wild. They had completed their rehabilitation and it was time for them to go home.

On the 3rd of March 2023, Saffron and Vanilla were loaded into the back of a 4x4 vehicle from the rehabilitation pool and driven the short distance to Kennack Sands.

It was such a beautiful cold winter sunny afternoon as we watched the seal pups being released. Vanilla was out of her cage first followed by Saffron.   As they made their way to the water, they looked back to say thank you and goodbye.   We all wished them good luck and waved with tears in our eyes.

The Cornish Seal Sanctuary rehabilitates between 50-70 seals pups in need every winter and each pup costs, on average, £2000 to rehabilitate, not including special cases.

A donation of any size would go such a long way, and help to protect the animals at the Sanctuary that has been a huge part of Cornwall´s heritage and an important animal rescue facility for over 60+ years.
