River Dee was rescued on 9th April 2024 River Dee, a 6 months old female seal grey pup, was rescued on the 9th of April 2024 from Holywell Bay, Newquay, by Lizzi and Julian, volunteer marine mammals medics, from the British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR). The pup was found malnourished and underweight for her age.   After consultation with the head vet at the BDMLR, a decision was made to take the seal to the BDMLR´s Cornwall Seal Hospital for initial treatment and care until a pen was available for her at the Seal Sanctuary´s hospital in Gweek on 15th April 2024. Photos Credit : Alison Davey - BDMLR The pup had a light blue tag with number SRI-N-066, after checking they found that River Dee had already been rehabbed at Seal Rescue in Ireland for three months.   On the 5th of January 2024 River Dee was released back into the wild at Courtown in Ireland, for some reason, she travelled to Cornwall, unfortunately losing a lot of weight.   On uplift, she was also, understandably, extremely exhausted. Update - 21st April 2024 : These photos below of River Dee were taken on 18th of April 2024 in the hospital. River Dee spent 6 days in the hospital for TLC from the animal care team specialists before she was moved to the outside nursery pool. Update - 21st May 2024 : The weather conditions in Cornwall were perfect to release some of the seal pups who had been staying at the Sanctuary for the past few months were released back into the wild on the 21st of May 2024. River Dee and Keem Bay were both at a good weight and fully recovered thanks to the care and expertise of the brilliant Animal Care Team.   It is such an amazing feeling for the team to see them happily "galumphing" back home.   Good luck little ones.   Click here to watch a short video of their release.
