Pancake was rescued on 9th January 2026

Meet Pancake, a female grey seal pup, was rescued from Chapel Porth near St Agnes by the British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR) marine mammal medic volunteers, Esther and Dan.   The pup was found hauled out at the top of the beach next to the access from the car park.   Esther monitored the pup for a while from a distance until Dan arrived, as the seal looked underweight, they went ahead and carried out a full assessment.   She was underweight at 15.2kg for her age, dehydrated, malnourished, lethargic, a little weak and also had a few minor wounds.

A decision was made to take the pup to the BDMLR´s hospital in Cornwall for initial treatment and care.

These photos below were taken on the 10th of January 2026 in the BDMLR hospital.

Update - 16th January 2026 : After spending a few days at the BDMLR´s hospital for intial care and treatment, Pancake was transferred to the Seal Sanctuary at Gweek on the 14th of January 2026 to continue her rehabilitation.   She is currently in the isolation area of the hospital and will be for a little while whilst she builds up her strength.

All new seal pups arrivals at the Seal Sanctuary have to be tested for avian flu before admittance due to the risk to the resident animals, especially the puffins.

How you can help?

The Cornish Seal Sanctuary couldn´t do their work without you.   Every year, we rescue seal pups in need of care from around the coastline.   From wounds to entanglement to malnourishment; there are lots of reasons why seal pups might need rescuing.

Seal pups cost on average £2,000 - £3,000 to go through rehabilitation - and this doesn´t include those that require special care.
