Mochi was rescued on 10th December 2025

The Cornish Seal Sanctuary received a telephone call from the British Divers Marine Life Rescue´s area coordinator, asking whether the team could check on a seal pup on the slipway at Mullion harbour.

Beth and Sean were dispatched and found the pup by a bench at the top of the slipway.

Sharon, one of the BDMLR marine mammal medic volunteers, was already on the scene providing essential monitoring for over two hours keeping members of the public away from the seal pup until staff from the Cornish Seal Sanctuary could attend.

Beth jumped the pup and with the assistance of Sean and Sharon, carried out a health assessment, including temperature, checking for injuries to the body with Minim surface staining to the eyes to look for any damage.   The pup was also given some oral rehydration.   She was underweight and malnourished with injuries.

They brought her back to the Sanctuary for urgent care.   The pup has been named Mochi.

Update - 18th January 2026 : Mochi was moved down to the outside nursery pools for her next stage of rehabilitation.   This means she is on the road to recovery and also has a deeper pool to swim in.   She currently shares her enclosure with Sierra.   Mochi weighs 18.7kg.   Click here to see a larger version of the photo below and a further ones taken on the 14th and 18th of January 2026.

Pups in the nursery pools will be learning how to behave in the wild, interacting with other seals and also competing for their fish, which are all vital skills they will need when they are released back out into the wild.

Flipper tag ID number SL355 (yellow).

How you can help?

The Cornish Seal Sanctuary couldn´t do their work without you.   Every year, we rescue seal pups in need of care from around the coastline.   From wounds to entanglement to malnourishment; there are lots of reasons why seal pups might need rescuing.

Seal pups cost on average £2,000 - £3,000 to go through rehabilitation - and this doesn´t include those that require special care.

Click here to find out how to sponsor a seal pup from rehab to release.   Thank you so much in advance!
