Komper, a Valais Blacknose Wether Sheep (Ovis aries), was born at the Cornish Seal Sanctuary on the 15th of February 2023, his mum is Ira.
This herd joined the site at the end of Summer 2022 to help manage the Sanctuary´s grass, with owner Katie leasing the area for these very special rare-breed sheep.
Keep your eyes peeled for Komper and his family and friends on your next visit.
The Valais Blacknose sheep are rare breed sheep that originate from the Valais canton of Switzerland. Native to the Upper Valais region, the Blacknose graze in the Alps in the summer months June-September and lower pastures in the winter. The Blacknose is a sturdy breed well adapted to the harsh conditions of the mountains.
There is evidence that the Blacknose has existed since the 15th century. Over time, characteristics have evolved to the majestic sheep we see today!
