Joe Thomas was rescued on 11th February 2024

Joe Thomas, a 3-4 months old male grey seal pup, was rescued from St Ives Bay on the 11th of February 2024 by members of the Sanctuary´s Animal Care Team.

A member of the Animal Care Team carried out a full assessment including giving the young pup electrolytes to rehydrate it.   The seal pup was malnourished, underweight for his age and had some superficial wounds.

It was decided that the pup needed to be checked out by a vet, so they contacted the Sanctuary´s local vet, Head & Head Veterinary Practice and booked an appointment on route to the Seal Sanctuary.

Whilst at the practice, the vet gave the pup a full assessment, took a blood sample and provided a course of antibiotics to help with infections from the wounds.
Update - 13th February 2024 : Joe is currently in the hospital, the animal care team specialists are working hard to get him hydrated, cleaning the superficial wounds on a regular basis. They are also working on getting some fish into him to slowly increase his weight.

Update - 25th February 2024 : Once Joe learns how to eat fish on his own and puts on more weight as he currently weighs 13.5kg, Joe can then be moved down to the nursery pools to continue his rehabilitation process. Photos below were taken on the 24th of February 2024.

Update - 6th March 2024 : Joe has recently passed away on 6th of March 2024; it is always very sad when one of the rescued pups dies but sometimes these little ones just don´t have enough antibodies and strength in them to pull through, despite the best efforts of all the Sanctuary´s Animal Care Specialists.
