This common seal pup weighing just 8.9kg, was found on the 19th of August 2023 at Mawgan Porth by volunteer marine mammal medics from the British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR).
The pup has been named "Hugh Grant", in line with the Sanctuary´s celebrity theme for the 2023/24 rescue season. He was completely malnourished, with swelling around his muzzle and a large ulcer in his right eye.

Elliot Badrick, the Senior Animal Care Specialist for the Sanctuary said "It´s been some time since we last took in a common seal. Despite their name, they´re not very common around the Cornish coastline, and they´re much smaller than those from our grey seal population."
"However, Hugh Grant is bright and active, and we´re hopeful we can help him successfully through the rehabilitation process and get him back out to where he´s supposed to be."
Hugh will now be cared for in the Sanctuary´s Seal Hospital, with regular night feeds and continuous monitoring until she can reach full health and return to the wild in a few months´ time.

Update - 31st August 2023 : Hugh´s ulcer has healed and he is no longer requires eye drops. He is also no longer suffering from a swollen muzzle so has come off his medication for that also. Still weighing 8.9kg, Hugh just needs to put on a bit of weight and then he will be ready to have a swim.

Update - 5th September 2023 : Hugh sadly passed away on 2nd September 2023; it is always very sad when one of the rescued pups dies but sometimes these little ones just
don´t have enough antibodies and strength in them to pull through, despite the best efforts of all the Sanctuary´s Animal Care Specialists.
