Grapefruit was rescued on 5th November 2020
Grapefruit, a 4 weeks old female grey seal pup, was rescued on 5th November 2020 from Towan beach in Newquay by volunteers of the British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR) marine mammal medics.

The pup was found underweight with wounds to her head and side, and also had ulcers in both eyes.

She was placed in a hospital pen at the Sanctuary where she received antibiotics and treatment for her wounds.

Grapefruit Update - 6th December 2020 : Grapefruit is now in the outside nursery pool number 1 with another rescued seal pup named Sprout. They are learning how to compete for fish during feeding time. She currently weighs 19.5kgs.

Her flipper tag ID number is SL115 (green).

Update - 29th December 2020 : Grapefruit is now in the rehab pool ready to be released back into the wild soon.
Update - 6th January 2021 : Grapefruit along with Tim Tam and Pork Pie were safely released back to the sea on 4th January 2021 at Dollar Cove.

They have all successfully completed their rehabilitation and are now back in their natural habitat, healed from their ailments and injuries.

Update - 28th April 2025 : Grapefruit has been spotted at a seal colony along the coasts of Cornwall on 16th October 2024 and 28th April 2025 by the Cornwall Seal Group Research Trust (CSGRT) volunteers.

Seals face many challenges, yet we all depend on them to balance our marine ecosystem, this is essential to make the oxygen we breathe. Seals are our globally rare wildlife tourist attraction, helping diversify coastal economic prosperity.
