Custard was rescued on 3rd October 2025

Custard, a 4 weeks old female grey seal pup, was rescued on the 3rd of October 2025 from Mullion Cove by the Cornish Seal Sanctuary´s Animal Care Experts and British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR) marine mammal medic volunteers.   She was found with severe bite wounds to her rear flippers.

All new seal pups arrivals at the Cornish Seal Sanctuary have to be tested for avian flu before admittance due to the risk to the resident animals, especially the puffins.

Custard is currently on a course of antibiotics, and the animal care team is cleaning her wounds several times a day to help her heal.   For now, it´s all about lots of rest for this little one, she is taking the vet´s orders very seriously.

Update - 3rd December 2025 : Custard was moved down to the outside pools for her next stage of rehabilitation.   This means she is on the road to recovery and also has a deeper pool to swim in.

Pups in the nursery pools will be learning how to behave in the wild, interacting with other seals and also competing for their fish, which are all vital skills they will need when they are released back out into the wild.

Her flipper tag ID number is SL335 (yellow).

This Christmas make sure you have a Treacle Tart & some Custard!

This Christmas Eve it was time for Treacle Tart and Custard to go home!   They were weighed and loaded into the back of the vehicle from the rehabilitation pool and released back into the wild.   We wished these two pups good luck and waved with tears in our eyes.
