Cheesecake was rescued on 31st December 2025 The Cornish Seal Sanctuary received a telephone call from Alison, the area coordinator for the British Divers Marine Life Rescue´s (BDMLR) marine mammal medic volunteers, asking whether the animal care team could check on a seal pup on the beach at Coverack who was entangled in netting. Alison also posted a message on the Coverack community facebook page asking for people to keep their distance from the pup as the Cornish Seal Sanctuary were on their way to assess the seal. © Photo Credit : Immie Barnett Maz and Sean from the Cornish Seal Sanctuary were dispatched and found the 10-12 weeks old male grey seal pup entangled with monofilament netting around his body and neck.   It took a while for them to cut away the horrible netting from his body, they then uplifted the pup and took him back to the Seal Sanctuary in Gweek for care and rehabilitation.   The pup also had respiratory issues, upset stomach and a high temperature.   He has been named "Cheesecake". Cheesecake will spend a few days in the isolation area of the hospital to get plently of rest! This photo below was taken on the 1st of January 2026. Update - 14th January 2026 : After being entangled in monofilament netting, this has left Cheesecake with a big wound around the back of his neck.   The team are taking really good care of this seal pup and his wound is being cleaned on a regular basis, and Cheesecake is having a daily swim in salty water in his hospital pen which is helping to he heal his wounds.   Once Cheesecake is completely healed, he will be moved to the outside pools to continue his rehabilitation.   These photos below were taken on the 14th of January 2026 in the main part of the hospital.   Currently weighs 21.48kg. Update - 28th January 2026 : Cheesecake was moved down to the outside nursery pools for his next stage of rehabilitation.   This means he is on the road to recovery and also has a deeper pool to swim in.   These photos below were taken on the 28th of January 2026 in nursery pool number 4. Pups in the nursery pools will be learning how to behave in the wild, interacting with other seals and also competing for their fish, which are all vital skills they will need when they are released back out into the wild. His flipper tag ID number SL374 (yellow). Update - 12th February 2026 : These photos below of Cheesecake were taken on the 12th of February 2026 in the rehabilitation pool. Update : Mochi, Christmas Pudding, Cheesecake, Roulade and Sierra were released back into the wild on the 5th of March 2026.
