Buster Keaton was rescued on 2nd January 2024

Buster Keaton, a 12 weeks old male grey seal pup, was rescued from Pollurian Cove on the 2nd of January 2024 by Tamara, the Sanctuary´s Curator, along with a volunteer marine mammals medic from the British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR).

Tamara did a full assessment including giving the young pup electrolytes to rehydrate it. The seal pup was malnourished, underweight for his age, had healthy looking teeth and a good temperature, but his breathing sounded a bit ruckly.

It was decided that the pup needed to be checked out by a vet, so they contacted the Sanctuary´s local vet, Head & Head Veterinary Practice and booked an appointment on route to the Seal Sanctuary.

Whilst at the practice, the vet gave the pup a full assessment, took a blood sample and provided a course of antibiotics to help with the respiratory infection.

Update - 29th January 2024 : Buster is now in the outside rehabilitation pool, this means he is on the road to recovery and mixing with other seal pups, also has a deeper pool to swim in.   Pups in the nursery pools will be learning how to behave in the wild, interacting with other seals and also competing for their fish, which are all vital skills they will need when they are released back out into the wild.

Buster´s flipper tag ID number is SL282 (yellow).

Buster along with lots of other rescued pups, were all at a good weight and fully recovered thanks to the care and expertise of the brilliant Animal Care Team. It is such an amazing feeling for the team to see them happily "galumphing" back home. Good luck little ones.
