Brownie was rescued on 30th November 2025
British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR) hotline received a telephone call early on the 30th of November 2025 from a concerned dog walker about a seal on the beach at Praa Sands.

Dan (one of the area coordinators), Eloise and Denise, local BDMLR volunteer marine mammal medics, went to check on the seal pup.   After an assessment of the pup, a decision was made to take this seal to the BDMLR´s hospital in Cornwall for initial treatment and care.

This 10-12 weeks old female seal pup was named "Brownie" by the medics.   She was found with wounds to her body and high temperature.   She was transferred on the 22nd of December 2025 to the Seal Sanctuary´s hospital in Gweek where she will continue her rehabilitation journey.

For 2025/26 rescue season the BDMLR volunteer medics and the Sanctuary´s Animal Care Team have been chosen "Cakes & Desserts" Theme for names and once the teams see each new arrival, they expect to have a pretty good idea which name belongs to which pup.

Update - 26th December 2025 : Brownie is now in the outside pools for her next stage of rehabilitation.   This means she is on the road to recovery and also has a deeper pool to swim in.

Pups in the nursery pools will be learning how to behave in the wild, interacting with other seals and also competing for their fish, which are all vital skills they will need when they are released back out into the wild.

Her flipper tag ID number is SL358 (yellow).

Update - 18th January 2026 : On a very foggy cold Sunday morning it was time for Brownie, Angel Delight and Marshmallow to be returned home back to the wild.   These three seals were weighed to make sure they had reached the ideal target weight of 30+kg for the grey seals and 25kg for the common.

Brownie, Angel Delight and Marshmallow were loaded into the back of the vehicle from the rehabilitation pool and released back into the wild.   They confidently made their way into the surf, however, Marshmallow and Angel Delight stayed close to the beach for a while, kept coming back until their told to go and and disappeared beneath the waves.   Although Angel Delight didn´t want to go home.   It is always a heart-warming moment that marks the successful end of their rehabilitation journey.   We all wished them good luck and waved with tears in our eyes.
