| Update 28th October 2004 |
| This week saw the arrival of a new permanent resident, an adult female grey seal.
The Sanctuary was contacted from the keepers of Whipsnade Animal Park after Snoopy’s companion died this year, with hope of providing a home for her. Of course we said yes and on Tuesday, Snoopy made the long journey from London to Cornwall. She arrived safely that evening and was put into nursery pool 2. Here she could see the other seals, but also rest from her travels on her own.
She was a little scared to start off with but soon gone her flippers wet.
Snoopy is the daughter of Magnus, who at 37 is the oldest grey seal in Europe. See press release to find out how this story unfolded.
Pups News Pups at the Sanctuary now reach 10. Roskilly and Itchen were moved in to nursery pool 1 on Monday; both are doing well and loving the attention given to them by the visitors. Red has also been moved to the nursery pool 1, after making to much noise in the hospital. Nicknamed ‘Houdini’ by the Animal Care Team, Red was found this morning in nursery pool 2, poor Snoopy must have had the shock of her life. Red had managed to squeeze himself under the gate to join Snoopy who was keeping as far away from Red as possible! Trent is not doing too good and is back in a pen by himself, he is very nervous at the moment and the team are keeping a close eye on him. Arrow is doing well and continues to put on weight at a steady pace. Taff is also continuing to do well and both she and Arrow will move to the nursery pools. Blyth is making lots of noise in the hospital, and is known for his very long neck. Severn is now off night feeds and in the last week has put on 4kg in weight, the Animal Care Team are very happy with her progress. Wriggle came in on Monday, from Westward Ho; she was picked up by the BDMLR. She was suffering from malnutrition and had wounds to rear flippers and pelvis. She will remain in isolation until wounds are healed and weight has increased. Dee, was rescued from Poldue at Mullion today just after one o'clock. This pup is very sick, and so the Animal Care Team is back on feeds every 4 hours. Kids TV programme Newsround was filming today at the Sanctuary with the help of press packer Jemma. They were here to film about the increase of pups we have had in the month of October and new pups expected after the storms have died down. Spotlight the local news on BBC1 also came to film on Monday after hearing about the large number of pups we have had in. |
