Beloved Resident California Sea Lion

The Cornish Seal Sanctuary are sad to announce that Sunny, six year old California Sea Lion born at Wuppertal Zoo in 2012, passed away earlier this month. Sunny has been cared for over 5 years at the Cornish Seal Sanctuary and his care team are deeply saddened at his sudden passing.

Tamara Cooper, the Sanctuary´s Curator said "The welfare of our animals is of utmost importance to us and a full investigation into the cause of his death took place, including full necropsy performed by our independent veterinary consultant working with our dedicated animal care team."
Sunny in April 2014 Sunny was having vital dental work under general anaesthetic to remove a damaged tooth that had been causing him discomfort.

Sadly he did not wake up from the anaesthetic. The results of the post mortem have shown that Sunny´s cause of death was most likely anaesthesia related, which unfortunately is always a risk with any operation or procedure.

"SEA LIFE Trust places the very highest priority on the welfare of the animals at our sanctuaries, which are supported by experienced animal care teams, marine biologists and world-renowned veterinary consultants."
