Hippo was rescued on 14th October 2011
On the 14th October 2011 we received a telephone call about a pup in a pretty poor state which needed the help of the team at the Sanctuary.

This pup was found on the beach at Portreath and arrived at the Sanctuary at 11am.

Hippo A clinical assessment was carried out by members of the Animal Care Team. The pup was first weighed and found to be around 15kg and 4 weeks old and a little boy, its assessment revealed this pup to be in a poor body condition with several small puncture wounds to flippers and body, but bright and alert was started on a course of antibiotics and vitamins, this pup has been named Hippo.

Update: 28th October 2011 - Hippo has been moved to the outside nursery pool number 4 but needs to learn to feed for himself.
Update: 23rd November 2011 - Hippo´s flipper tag number is 10 (green).

Update: 28th January 2012 - Hippo is currently in the convalescent pool.

Update: 6th April 2012 - Hippo was returned to the wild on 26th March 2012
at Porthtowan.

Update: 14th May 2012 - Hippo has been spotted in the wild at a local haul-out along the north coast of Cornwall on 26th April 2012 by members of the Cornwall Seal Group who identifies and monitors seals in the wild.
