Rescued seal pups
Ludo, a young grey seal pup, was found stranded a thousand miles aways from the UK shores on a the beach near Sagres in Portugal.

The pup was rescued by staff from the Zoomarine rescue centre in the Algarve resort of Albufeira in January 2014 and treated for dehydration and an ulcer in his left eye.

Once Ludo had completed his rehabilitation at the Zoomarine rescue centre in Portugal, he was flown by plane from Faro airport to Heathrow airport, from there the seal was driven to the Cornish Seal Sanctuary at the beginning of August 2014.

Ludo stayed in one of the nursery pools at the Seal Sanctuary for about 2 weeks to make sure he was fighting fit before members of the Animal Care Team release him back into the wild along the Cornish coastline. Click here to read Ludo´s press release.

Photo below was taken on 11th August 2014 at the Seal Sanctuary.

Penguins logo
The Sanctuary´s penguins have finished their annual molt, and although they will still look scruffy for a few weeks, it won´t be long before they start to produce a beautiful new coat of feathers!!

This is an itchy process for the little group of penguins and it can put them off their food, which is why it is so important for the team to regularly weigh them and monitor any changes in their weight.

The Octonauts
The Octonauts, Captain Barnacles (photo below) and Peso, two members of the undersea adventure heroes from CBeebies, visited the Cornish Seal Sanctuary between 2nd and 31st August 2014 for fun-filled activities.

The dynamic duo of Captain Barnacles and Peso were due to head back to the Octopod on 25th August, but their stay was extended to 31st August due to popular demand.

Sara seemed especially impressed by the sea lions, which her children were able to feed.

Much to everyone´s delight Sara was more than happy to pose for photographs including the one below with Mark.

If you discover an injured seal pup
As we approach September it´s time for grey seals to begin their breeding and pupping season - which for the Sanctuary signals the busiest time of the year for the Animal Care Team.

For over 55 years the Sanctuary have been rescuing, rehabilitating and releasing those pups from our local coastline that find themselves in trouble, whether it be eye problems, respiratory infections and malnourishment to broken bones, pollution-related problems and being separated from their mother too soon.

Just like to remind you that if you discover a seal pup that is in distress or alone, please call the Seal Sanctuary on 01326 221361 and/or the BDMLR on 01825 765546.

DO keep your distance;
DON´T attempt to handle the pup;
DON´T attempt to put the pup in the sea;
DON´T ignore the situation;
DO tell the appropriate organisation.
