Badger Update - 17th November 2014 : The blood tests results showed that Badger had a high white blood cell count which shows possible infection and stress. For the first few days the pup was given a mixture of fluids and liquidised fish (like a milk-shake) and he started to moult, which revealed a fabulous jet black coat underneath.

Update - 12th December 2014 : Badger is now in the outside nursery pool for his next stage of rehabilitation.

Badger - Photo taken on 28th December 2014 As you may be aware Badger is a Melanistic Seal meaning pure black, not usual in Grey Seals. In the past 10 years, this is only the second time that the Seal Sanctuary has rescued a Melanistic Seal.

Research carried out by Lenie ´t Hart in The Netherlands in 2010, found that there is a slight chance you will see an Albinistic Common Seal (not found in Grey Seals) and a a slight chance you will see Melanistic Grey Seal (not found in Common Seals).
Update - 31st March 2015 : Badger is looking very handsome, he is currently in the convalescent pool.

Update - September 2015 : Badger is now a resident due to his thyroid level dropped too low to be released back to the wild so he will be on life-long treatment to maintain his level. When it drops Badger loses his appetite and becomes lethargic which in the wild would mean he would become malnourished and the Sanctuary do not want to release a seal back into the wild with a health problem that is serious, so he is staying at the Sanctuary.

Badger is now in the resident pool with the other grey seals but Ray is leading him astray and teaching him some of his tricks.
