Location of Rescue : From the beach near Polzeath

Age at Rescue : 4 - 5 weeks old

Weight at Rescue : 19kgs

Reason for rescue : Multiple infected bite wounds on head close to left ear and on rear flippers.
Superficial ulcer to right eye.

The pup was transported by members of the British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR) team from the beach near Polzeath to the Cornish Seal Sanctuary where she was put into one of the isolation pens in the hospital.

A clinical assessment was carried out and the wounds were cleaned. She was prescribed antibiotics, anti-inflammatories and eye drops. For the first 24 hours the pup had rehydration fluids and is now being weaned onto fish. This pup has been named Astrid.
Astrid Update - 22nd November 2013 : Astrid has been moved through from isolation pen to the main hospital pen number 4 and is enjoying swimming now that her eye has healed!
Update - 2nd December 2013 : This photo (right) of Astrid was taken on 30th November 2013 in the hospital. She currently weighs 24kgs.

Update - 8th December 2013 : The Animal Care Team are hoping that Nebula and Mercury will show Astrid what to do, as she has seems to have forgotten how to eat for herself now she is down in the outside pools! The Team keeping a close eye on Astrid!

Astrid Update - 29th December 2013 : Astrid is currently in the convalescent pool.

Her flipper tag number is 192.

Update - 20th January 2014 : Astrid is waiting to be released back to the wild, unfortunately she cannot be safely returned until the weather improves.

Astrid has completed her rehabilitation and is now ready to be returned to the wild.

Seal Release - 28th May 2014 Update - 29th May 2014 : Astrid along with Aries, Soyuz, G-Force and Aquarius were released back into the wild on 28th May 2014 at Gwithian.
